How Harvey Helps Boost Conversions

Copywriters Tool Kit Promo

Harvey Specter is the best closer in NYC.

You’re here, and here’s way up here.

So how does Harvey Specter, handsome, rich, arrogant lawyer of the hit Netfilx series “Suits” persuade more successfully than anyone else?

He goes in knowing (ie. finds out first) what they want most.

Or which result they fear most…

Then he shows them the way to get it. Or avoid it.

Rewind that: He shows them how doing things his way, gets them what they want most.

Wow!

That sounds a lot like sales now, doesn’t it?

Isn’t that what we as copywriters hope to do? Strive to do?

We want to present a compelling message, a story, which leads the prospect to do exactly what we ask them to do. (buy this thing).

In the hope of what?

Why should they?

That’s always our biggest hurdle right?

Why buy – and why buy right now. Reason why.

  • Is it to line our pockets with filthy lucre? No.
  • Is it to have something pretty to sit on the shelf? No.
  • Is it to satiate their desire to acquire? No.
  • Is it to get a shortcut to what they really want? Better
  • Is it to get the desired result done for them, fast, guaranteed, without risk? Much Better!

We always get the best results when we know what it is they want most, right?

The REAL.

Trouble is, The REAL may be 7 layers deep. Buried under many superficial, socially acceptable stories they tell, to themselves and others, to seem rightous, pious, or “normal”.

I think it was famed copywriter John Carlton who promotes repeating the “why” question 7 times to get to the REAL root of the desire.

“Why do you need (want) that?” To boost my profits.

“Why do you want to boost your profits?” So I can have more take-home money.

“Why do you want more take-home money?” Because my bills are so high.

“Why are your bills so high?” Because my kid’s college, car payments, big house.

“Why do you have all these big things?” So people think of me as successful.

“Why do you need people to think of you as successful?” So I don’t think myself a failure.

“Why do you think yourself a failure?” (Silence)

YOU: “So, if I could offer you something that would eliminate you feeling a failure, would that be something you’d want?”

Maybe what they really desire is a way to stick it to the MF who told them they’d never succeed in the first place!

No Street Credit Yet? Do This.

As promised in the previous post… You’d like to have the influence and persuasive power of an EXPERT. But you have no reputation. Or you’re new…

Here’s how you can ethically borrow the abilities of others.

(Even the following technique is borrowed!) Once upon a time, early in my photography days, I was told Photoshop was key to producing award-winning photographs. Trouble was, each time I tried to use it – I couldn’t even get an image to open in the stupid program for editing! Failure upon failure for weeks before I found a helpful video on YouTube. Then another. I was hooked! I took careful step-by-step notes while watching all the videos. Soon enough I had over 100 index cards full of notes. Suddenly, Photoshop was easy for me! One day, I mentioned these notes casually to a photographer friend and they said, “I’d love to have a collection like that!” BINGO! Here was the birth of a product idea. Quickly I got to work on putting those note cards into a publication I could sell. Long story short, the product went thru several iterations, from card deck to self-published paperback. Ultimately selling many 100’s of copies with virtually no advertising cost. This borrowing technique took me from Photoshop idiot to perceived expert with thousands of dollars in sales in less than 6 months. What was the technique, in case you missed it? Translation. Taking the expertise of others and translating it into new media. Here, from YouTube videos, which were hard to keep pace with, to written notes you could follow step-by-step at your own pace. Said one buyer, Bill, from Canada, “Your way of explaining things Bob, does more for me than all the videos.” It has been said, “There is nothing new under the sun, only new combinations of what already exists.” Great truth in that I think. For every new software, product, or service that comes out, or is out, a wealth spigot is waiting to be opened for the one who can explain it better, faster, easier, or find a new and better use for it. You don’t have to be ‘THE EXPERT’. Or have any experience at all to step up and succeed. In fact, being new gave me an advantage. Because in MY explanations of Photoshop, I had zero experience. So I could only explain it in terms a newbie would understand. No assumptions. No technical jargon to bog folks down. Only simplicity. You don’t have to market to everyone. You only need to know more than those on the ladder rung just behind you to succeed. 10 years later,  there are many who can run circles around me with their latest and greatest Photoshop skills. But there may be no one better than me to help newbies get started. You can translate your way to the top quickly – by ethically borrowing the expertise of others in any field. If you’re starting from scratch and have no street credit, no name,  no reputation, no letters after your name, you can still tell how THEY did it, do it, in different terms, media,  or language. I’ve used this method to great success, more than once. In fact, my latest product, “THE COPYWRITER’S TOOL KIT” was a translation/collaboration of a work originally produced by a highly respected and successful marketer. Everyone could do well by utilizing these tools BEFORE beginning any project. What would you like to be King or Queen of? How can I help? Bob Schwarztrauber P.S.
